“Mentalization” is a notion receiving considerable attention today. The concept was first developed in the context of attachment research. It refers to a person’s ability to understand her own and other persons’ mental states. Mentalization is quite different from the traditional idea of empathy, as it is more precisely defined, and covers a broader range of abilities.
Many adults and children who have been severely traumatized have special problems with mentalizating about other persons. Work with mentalization skills is therefore strongly indicated for them. In VIT a number of techniques, most of them video-based, are used for helping patients with these skills. In this seminar some theoretical background will be given and these techniques will be taught.
